Godzilla vs. Kong will be released in 2021 as a sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.
Godzilla vs. Kong had a rocky development, first scheduled for May 29, 2020, then being moved up to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021. It was then pushed back to March 26, 2021, before finally arriving in American theaters on March 31, 2021. The film was also available to watch on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.
Adam Wingard directed the picture, which was produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers. Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script, which was adapted from a tale by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on King of Monsters as well. Godzilla vs. Kong takes place five years after King of the Monsters and features a massive confrontation between Godzilla and Kong in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.
In 2024, five years after Godzilla fought and killed his extraterrestrial nemesis Ghidorah for dominance in 2019, he and Kong are currently the only active Titans on Earth. On Skull Island, its climate has become unstable due to a storm generated by Ghidorah combining with the storm cell perpetually surrounding the island, forcing Monarch to contain Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him company.
But when Jia comes to pay Kong a visit and holds out a doll to him, the Titan, knowing that Kong is stuck within the biodome, discovers this and instantly tosses a tree at the doll, killing her.
After Godzilla's attack, the general public became enraged, inspired by his capacity to defend humanity. Maddie Russell, an adult Bernie listener, is terrified by the newest Godzilla attack on her high school. It's not until she tries to talk sense into her widowed father Mark (who happens to be the Monarch's director) about Godzilla's rampage that he listens to her. Madison enlists the help of her best friend, Josh Valentine, to investigate the secrets of Apex and the guy behind Godzilla's rampage soon after this.
Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source on the Hollow Earth, a subterranean realm under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth, but was killed by a powerful anti-gravity barrier within the tunnel. After Walter discloses that Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized vehicles capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure, he eventually accepts.
Nathan flies to Skull Island to see his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, and proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to direct them to the energy source since Skull Island can no longer hold him and let him to exist. Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was transferred off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan persuades her that they must go on this mission in order to end Godzilla's rampage and find Kong a new home.
But as Godzilla is stunned by deep charges, Kong is able to surface for air, breaking up their battle.
Madison and Josh encounter Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry since they feel Apex had something to do with Godzilla's shift in behavior. The "eye" Bernie had mentioned before has vanished from the Apex headquarters they sneak into with. They accidentally trap themselves in an antigravity transport truck transporting Skullcrawler eggs and are taken to Hong Kong via an underground tube after discovering a hidden facility deep down.
There, the three disembark and find themselves in a huge dark room. They see Apex's most powerful weapon, "Mechagodzilla" which is a mechanized version of Godzilla controlled by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's chief technology officer, Ren Serizawa, who is also his father. Mechagodzilla is put to the test as soon as the mecha is turned on. Walter unleashes a large adult Skullcrawler, codenamed "Number 10" into the room. Skullcrawler is about to attack Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is grabbed by Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla uses a powerful red energy beam to cut the creature in half, allowing Madison, Josh, and Bernie to hide in a small hole in the ground. There are limits to how much power the mecha can use, so the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down right away because of them.
The Hollow Earth has a biosphere comparable to Skull Island. Two Warbats attack them, one of which destroys one of the HEAVs while scouting the area. Kong rescues the group by killing the first Warbat and flinging its corpse onto the second, knocking it down, but it recovers and constricts itself around him, forcing him to collapse. Before smothering Kong, Nathan's team's HEAV assaulted the Warbat, enabling Kong to escape and pound the creature to death before eating its guts.
Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad continue on their trek, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that previously belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old struggle between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they explore the inside, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race before sitting on a massive throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's crew uses to enhance Mechagodzilla's power supply can also be used to replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew employ spider-like drones to collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her guards to fire upon Nathan's crew, only for Kong to scream loudly in their defense. In the meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and goes directly for Hong Kong.
Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and sets off with his axe towards Hong Kong, followed by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. When Kong meets Godzilla in Hong Kong again, he gains the upper hand and shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat, preventing him from firing his atomic breath. Kong injures Godzilla in the thigh with his axe, but Godzilla removes and discards the axe. Kong reclaims his axe and wields it against Godzilla, generating an explosion that sends both Titans fleeing, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the Godzilla fight.
Walter instructs Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla back at the Apex headquarters. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses Ren's pleas and tells him to activate the mecha. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for penetrating Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this to begin with, yet he boldly responds that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.
When the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks affect Mechagodzilla, the robot goes berserk, murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned while he talks about his invention. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and attacks the city before Godzilla can stop it. Prior to engaging Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a salvo of missiles at its biological counterpart to close the gap.
Heaps onto the robot and redirects the red energy beam, sparing Godzilla's life, as Mechagodzilla prepares to fire it into his throat. Knowing that Kong saved his life and recognizing that Godzilla is not an opponent, Godzilla aids Kong in his struggle against the mechanical demon Mechagodzilla.
Josh and Bernie are overjoyed to meet Mark and ask him on his show to speak about the Monarch facility in Roswell, which Madison reunites with and introduces him to Josh and Ilene. After a brief pause, Godzilla appears, causing Kong to take his axe and ready to begin the battle once again. Godzilla, on the other hand, remains still while he observes Kong. Kong lowers his axe in defeat, putting a stop to the animosity between his race and Godzilla's. After a protracted battle, Godzilla and Kong are no longer adversaries, and they treat each other as equals before Godzilla returns to the sea quietly.
Monarch will have built an observation station in the Hollow Earth at some point in the future, if not already. In the morning, Kong goes by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia. To declare his new home and kingdom, the King of the Hollow Earth, Kong leaps onto an overhanging rock and pounds his chest, roaring as he proclaims himself the new king.
Godzilla vs. Kong has received mostly good reviews. As of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, 254 of which were fresh, with a "Tomatometer" rating of 74% certified Fresh. According to the site's critics' consensus, "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."
In the words of the site's audience review summary, "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, although many viewers enjoyed the film's monster brawling, others were let down by the film's "half-baked" human element. In the United States, the film had generated an estimated $48.5 million dollars in box office revenue by Sunday morning of its five-day weekend release period, helping to put a stop to the COVID-19 pandemic-fueled box office decline. WarnerMedia claimed in a statement that the film had the largest viewership of any series or movie aired on HBO Max since its launch, but did not disclose precise figures. The film also performed well in foreign markets, earning over $236 million in countries outside than the United States.
